European Voluntary Services (EVS) program in Kathmandu

WNSO has been implementing the European Voluntary Services (EVS) program in Kathmandu with coordination of CEIPES. This is a group EVS project which has been managing 4 volunteering placements in Nepal. There are 4 sending countries: Italy, France, Spain, and Netherlands. The service is funded with the support of the European Voluntary Service (Youth in Action Program of the European Commission). The main themes are anti-discrimination and human rights education. The project main aims are to contribute to create a culture of peace and human rights for all and to enhance active participation through volunteering.  The methodology used throughout the project is in the framework of the non-formal education and peace education approach: experiential learning, cooperative learning, active participation, learning by doing. These is used at a transverse level in the partnership development, volunteers training and support, visibility and exploitation activities. In summary, the aim of the project is to help the community especially those in the orphanage and the disabled, and work with peers of schools/colleges for the inclusion and promote the Inter Cultural Learning among volunteers. This project has been implementing since May and will be continued on September, 2012.

Under this project, the key activities are as follows;

Activity 1 – Volunteers for Youth Human Right Education Club (HRE Club) at Higherschools/colleges students in Kathmandu valley

 CCRC College, Kumaripati and SV College, Sankhamul are selected for the HRE club and HRE is continued since project inception in Nepal.

 Activity 2 - Assistance for people with disabilities at School of Disabled

SERC School of Disability, Baluwatar is selected for the support to children with disability and it has initiated since April 2012.

 

Activity 3 -  Organize leisure activities in an orphanage

Pabitra Orphange and Himalayan Orphanage, Dhapasi are selected for the support activities to the orphanages children.

Furthermore, international volunteers are working together with Nepalese volunteers to get the knowledge, insights and ideas in different field of Intercultural learning.  In this way the project is implementing under the coordination of WNSO and mobilize the volunteers as  active actors in the promotion of this culture of peace and human rights, demonstrating, developing

Expected learning outcomes are as follows;

  • Basic English and Nepalese language knowledge;
  • Ability to work in group as a team
  • Creativity; Relations management ability;
  • Intercultural skills and attitudes;
  • Specific competences related with the tasks carried out: skills to work with children, disabled youth and youth in general, understanding of group dynamics, capacity to manage a group, skills in non-formal education activities, knowledge about human rights, ability to organize an activities’ schedule for a youth club, help to orphanage kids for personal development, knowledge and ability to mentor youth with disabilities, values and attitudes of solidarity and support to other, etc.
